Pinched Nerve Treatment in Spokane, WA

Pinched Nerve Treatment

Are You a Candidate For Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

A pinched nerve in the lower back can lead to intense pain that radiates from the lumbar region down the back of one leg—traveling from the buttocks, along the back of the thigh, and even reaching the calf and foot.

This pain may start suddenly or develop slowly over time. It is often described as a sharp, shooting sensation, similar to an electric shock. Movements involving the leg, back, or other affected areas typically worsen the discomfort.

While the pain can spread evenly along the leg, there are usually specific points where it feels more concentrated. This discomfort is frequently accompanied by numbness or tingling sensations along the sciatic nerve—the body’s longest nerve group, which runs from the lower back down both legs.

Causes of a Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve happens when pressure or irritation affects the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. This pressure can result from several issues, such as a herniated disc, narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis), or, less commonly, infection or tumor.
The sciatic nerve, the largest and longest nerve in the body, measures about three-quarters of an inch in diameter in adults. It originates from the sacral plexus—a nerve network in the lower back (lumbosacral spine).

This nerve and its branches control movement and sensation (motor and sensory functions) in the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot, and toes.

When the sciatic nerve is compressed or “pinched,” it can cause pain that travels along these pathways, explaining why pinched nerve pain may radiate to different parts of the body.

Common causes include bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy, spinal stenosis, tumors, infections, or trauma. All of these can exert pressure on the sciatic nerve or its related nerve roots in the lower back, leading to pain and other symptoms.
